A few users have contacted us and asked us, why we decided to build the site for users to use “real names” instead of just screen names. Well, to put it simply, to help try and keep people honest.
Up until now, almost all other online dating sites allowed users to create screen names, hiding their true identity. While in a perfect world, this creates a sense of security for some, this also allows people to create false identities of themselves online. How do you know if someone is using a real picture of themselves, or if they are truly who they say they are?
By using real names, and friends lists, not only does this allow introductions amongst circles of friends to take place, but it also helps keep everyone honest. How willing would you be to use a fake picture as your profile photo if you knew all your friends could see?
We believe using real names is the next evolution of online dating. Let us know what you think.

Many people have asked, SayHarro…I like the name, but how did it come to be? I think we can all agree, that the name of a company/brand/website carries a lot of weight. After all, often times the name is someone’s lone first impression. So then the question became, what first impression did we want people to have about our company?
Initially, there was much debate, but time and time again the same core theme kept coming back…we want the site to be fun! From that discussion, we knew we didn’t want the site name to be too serious. After all, at the end of the day, we wanted the site to help people feel more comfortable with online dating and networking. Why shouldn’t dating and networking be kept fun online? When was the last time you went out for a date and filled out 4 hours of compatibility forms just to see if you have a chance with the person?
The next step was for us to study the competition. There was a strong trend of companies relying heavily on names which started with “e” and “i”. Names such as, eMatch or iHarmony…I don’t think those are real companies, but I’m sure you catch my drift. Market trends can almost be like a rip tide and suck you in whole. For a couple weeks we tossed around different words with “e” and “i” beginnings. The names seemed so cheesy and stale, I’ll spare you with examples of what we had. It definitely wasn’t our finest hour in creative thinking.
Ok, so we knew we wanted both the site and the site name to be fun, and we knew we didn’t want to follow any of the trends. So instead of looking outside, we looked inside. Ultimately, what did we want members of our site to do? We wanted them to say hello to each other! After all, so many sites are great for maintaining networks you’ve made in real life, but aren’t good for actually expanding your network online. So we decided, say hello was a great start, it had a call to action in the name, and it was simple. But say hello still seemed too square. SayHello.com…it didn’t seem fun, and “fun” was something we wanted the site name to be since day one.
Being the goofy people that we are, we often would say “harro” to each other instead of hello, especially on the phone. It wasn’t long before it clicked. How about SayHarro! The name worked for everyone, and breathed new life into our exhausted amateur marketing minds. That my friend, is the cliff notes to how the name SayHarro came to be.
